a horse post!!!!

March 2, 2015

framed gypsy eyes

this is one of the first photos i took when i met the gypsies

four years ago.

it was february 21, 2011.

rose caught my eye that day.

she was magical.

i had no idea at the time that one day she would be mine.

in fact, i had no idea that this meeting would be a turning point in my life.

* * * * * * * *

meeting the gypsies changed everything.

we had one horse, our lovely little sorrel paint sunny.

but it was the gypsies that made my world shift.

now, four years and six gypsies later,

we live in a little wonderland we call the fuzzy slippers farm.

i look out the kitchen window and see seven horses,

two donkeys, and a flock of chickens to start each morning.

mud has become a permanent fixture in my entryway,

at least during this season.

and there is never an end to the list of chores to be accomplished.

but there is magic in every day,

so long as i take the time to look for it.

most days i do.

* * * * * * * *

it’s been a while since the horses had their own post,

although they are a major part of every day.

the weather hasn’t exactly been allowing us to do more than

the requisite daily chores with them, but we did have

a glorious week last month that gave all of them a chance

to have some real attention.

after a thorough grooming we took them for walks

around our property and the larger one next door.

first it was caoinlean.

he is such a handsome lad.

we did some spook training with sunbeams.

he did very well.

he was quite interested in the new baby lambs just north of us.

caoinlean is always waiting at the gate when i go out to feed,

follows me around the pen,

and is much like an eager pup when we go for walks like this.

he’s a great companion.

meadbh certainly wanted a turn.

this one’s a little firecracker.

she’s very well behaved when being handled,

but a bit impatient for her own turn!

she’s not a big girl, but she has single-handedly taken on the responsiblity

of keeping her auntie rose well exercised.

she loved every minute of having our attention focused solely on her,

especially the grazing time that she got at the end of our walk,

which you can see a tiny slow motion clip of HERE.

cormac mac airt is our baby.

although he appears to be a ham,

he’s actually trying to point out that the tooth fairy came.

he’s getting very tall,

much taller than his mama rose or big brother caoinlean.

in fact, he may be in competition with tireachan

when he reaches his full height.

although we won’t ride him this year,

he is learning to be very comfortable with the saddle on

for walks and when being lunged.

this little guy has a super sweet disposition.

and, like his sister meadbh,

appreciates a little snack for a job well done.

* love *

* * * * * * * *

so, while i still love to focus on a good eye shot when i can,

soft Rose

i will always have a soft spot in my heart

for rose as my special model.

rose is my girl.

rose knows just how to look at life…

and she isn’t afraid to dream big.

but as long as the weather looks like this…

we may have to wait on photographing some of those big dreams.

thanks for horsing around with us today–

i’m glad you stopped by!!

They are all so pretty and obviously happy. Such great light for these photos, too. I love getting a dose of “horse” from your blog!

I believe they are happy, Diana! they get along so well. I’m looking forward to more of this light– although the sun is shining it is still chilly and very snowy outside. soon spring will come, right?

in some ways it still does seem like that! life has certainly changed, though, and in amazing ways. perhaps, just perhaps, a special pony is waiting for you to find it in the months to come. someone who will walk by your side as you climb the hill to your garden. magic happens ✨

those are the thoughts I had when I first met them! we went into the pen with them and they circled around us to be petted! it WAS magical! and yes, with a few rays of late afternoon sunlight it’s pretty close to perfection! xx

They fill your heart, in a huge way, don’t they Janet? I can feel the love and respect you have for them and oh, how they bring you so much joy!
All are unique. Their own personalities. Their to-die-for eyelashes!
Rose. Special Rose. Animals are the greatest things.
You and your gypsies. What a match made in heaven. Or rather, in Fuzzy Slipper Farm!
    Big smiles!

they do fill my heart and bring much joy, Lynn! as I look out the kitchen window and see them munching their breakfast in sun on snow I feel a deep knowing that this life was meant for me all along and that these animals are gifts of learning for the things that cannot be taught any other way. apparently I am a willing student, given the collection I have amassed… 😉 xx
