snapshots of inspirations

February 26, 2015

i feel a creative restlessness,

a need to anchor deep and commit to working on ideas

and make them manifest.

sometimes it helps to walk around the studio

and look at things i love,

things that i have loved consistently for a long time.

it helps me to feel grounded,

to see that the threads that run through my life

are strong pieces of a work in progress

weaving whole cloth that becomes a life.

don’t ask me what i do,

as i have a tendency to list things that

i think will validate me in your eyes

and come up feeling that the list is inadequate.

instead,

ask me what i see in my mind,

what i dream,

how pieces fit together to make meaning,

what i wish for.

then we can make tea

and sit and talk about neat things.

It feels like I just browsed through, ever so slowly, the most fantastic Antique store slash Trading Post that ever was! I stopped and lingered longer and then some more at the old photograph of the school children in their classroom. Their outfits look British. Is that so?
You are feathering your own nest with very neat things. I love that.

it is quite a unique accumulation, yes? the photograph is of my great-aunt’s classroom. it is undated, but the family immigrated to the US from Germany in 1914 when she was seven, so it could be in Germany or in New Jersey. it is one of the many treasures i chose especially from her estate early in my teaching career. the little faces continue to speak to me and to validate the strong feelings that i have about the work of educating our children. i’m glad that you singled that out.

You have such an inspiring collection of interesting things! So much richness and texture. A walk around your studio would get the creative juices going, for sure.

it’s true– the collection is inspiring. it’s also true that i tend to spin in many directions at once and completion of one thing before moving on to another is a challenge!
we continue to experience a lineup of snow storms that is keeping our ground white and giving the weenie tribe cabin fever! i hope you are getting a little more up north before the winter ends!

oh, i do too!! one of my fondest memories is of Brandt and I arriving at your home in Germany for the first time and you having a pot of tea and a homemade loaf of banana bread waiting! can you walk to the lake from the NY house? one of these days i’d like to come in fall or early winter before you head south and walk to the lake with you.

I see in these photos the colors of your dreams, the beat of an artist’s heart.
You don’t need permission or acceptance from anyone for that.
It’s real, it’s you and it’s beautiful. You are enough.

your healing words!! how is it that we can know something to be true and yet come to doubt it? i appreciate having your presence in my life and treasure your friendship.
