a full house

December 9, 2014

if i was a poker player,

i’d be pretty happy to see a full house in my hand.

if i rolled the dice in yahtzee,

a full house would give me a sweet 25 points.

three of one kind,

two of another–

a full house is a good thing.

for years we’ve enjoyed a full house here in wonderland–

three cats and two dogs have shared our domicile.

(yes, i know there are 26 other critters here on the property,

i’m only referring to those within our own four walls.)

when we lost brodie back in september,

our forever home had a heartbreaking vacancy.

otto pined for his lost brother,

especially at night.

the minute the lights were out

he’d start a staccato barking–

short, sharp barks punctuated by just enough space

to fool us into believing he’d gone to sleep…

no.  not for a good while.

i started visiting the local animal shelters

and then checking them online every day.

nothing was right.

brandt and i decided that the only real good fit for us

at this time was another dachshund.

it would have taken me months or years to stumble upon

what we were looking for at a shelter,

so i looked online for breeders.

something about that didn’t align with our values.

knowing that there were so many homeless animals out there

we didn’t feel good about asking somebody to make us a new one.

now, if you’ve been with me for a while

you know that i strongly believe that when good intent is set

mountains can move,

and i’m pretty sure long’s peak is a degree or two north of its former location.

somehow, through the best of good fortune,

i found beth at coast to coast dachshund rescue.

although the dog we were initially interested in

had already found its forever home,

beth read our application, talked to us by phone,

and suggested another dog for us to look at.

then she brought him over to meet us.

it was love at first sight.

this little one was born to live here.

it’s a shame, for his sake and ours, that we didn’t find him when he was born.

but there’s no sense thinking about the past

when there is so much future to look forward to together!

now, of course we had to be practical about this

(i know–  my strong suit, right?)

so we had to bring the clan together and all had to agree

that this was going to be a good fit.

i’d like to point out that moufette the cat has happily parked himself

on the bed that the dog brought over for his first playdate.

safe to assume that these two pose no threat to each other?

then said dog whispered into camille’s ear

that he had secretly always wanted a cat sister.

she completely fell for it.

oliver refused to be interviewed but let me know he had no objections.

what he actually said was, “how could i object to a face like that?”!

and then moufette told him stories about the meals around here,

licking his lips at the thought of holiday cooking.

you may be wondering how otto felt about this whole idea.

after all those sleepless nights, he was strongly in favor.

you are one shameless cat…

but a good-hearted one, i must admit.

brandt?  well, let’s just say that,

despite a few health complications in our little friend that might have been a concern,

adoption was pretty certain from first introduction.

so, GOOD NEWS, people!!

we are back to a full…

wait a minute.

what’s this?

uh oh…

rescued from a shelter 12/5,

met us that afternoon,

forever home on 12/7.

because when you have something to offer,

it’s the right thing to give it.

we had the home, the space, the love.

and now look…

and you know what?

this gives us two sets of three, a full house plus

and that, my friends, is a hand where everybody wins!

*thanks for being here*

p.s.  i also got a real nice friend out of the deal–

thanks, beth!!

and thanks for taking some of these photos!

What a happy ending for everyone! I loved every bit of this story, from the first introduction to the whispers in the cat’s ear to the family photo at the end! They’re a couple of very lucky weenies to have found pet parents like you! xx

I’m so happy for them and for you! And all the critters are fast friends. I had to laugh at Moufette taking over the new dog bed – that exactly what our big boy Boo – Moufette’s look-alike cousin – would do!

ha ha!! i sometimes wonder if Boo and Moufette are siblings separated at birth! yes, we are very happy with our two new little residents, both in our home and in our hearts! they are loving, entertaining, and fun!

Thank you so much for rescuing them. I’m glad and proud that it’s a value we share. I hope they help to heal the hole left by your friend’s passing. May you share love and joy, for as long as time allows.

oh, brandi! the joy they have brought and instill into our days is very healing, indeed! tomorrow we take the little black one up to the csu veterinary clinic for a follow-up to his initial visit when he first came to rescue. he has some heart issues but they can’t be anything compared to the heart issues i’d have if i let that get in the way! to see him play joyfully with toys and roll around on the ground in the sun with his brothers is good, good medicine. xx

I’m teary eyed and laughing at the same time, Janet.
