and the light returns

December 23, 2012

yesterday was the winter solstice,

and again we celebrated with a “mother of all releasings ceremony“.

we had eagerly anticipated this day and this new family tradition,

so at daybreak i was ready with the camera.

it did not disappoint:

later in the morning greenie, our neighborhood peacock,

dropped by with a little surprise–

he had brought his darling peahen with him!

it was the first time we had seen her.

though much more subdued in color and minus the flashy tail,

she, too, is a beautiful bird.

then followed plenty of hustle and bustle getting ready for the big event,

but finally we literally “had the soup on” and were ready to indulge

in some good eating!

and good it was!

there was a divine hors d’oeuvres tray,

a pot of turkey/white bean chili,

a fabulous rustic tomato soup,

sourdough dinner rolls the size of softballs,

and for dessert…  pumpkin cheesecake with whipped cream.

wine and champagne flowed throughout the evening.

after dinner, we got to the job of creating our little bundles

to cast into the fire:

slips of paper on which were written those things that no longer serve us

(think negative attributes here…)

along with tobacco and lavender as gifts to mama earth,

all tied up in little pieces of black fabric sprinkled with gold spots

reminiscent of the night sky, and tied with twine.

once the fire pit was blazing,

we trudged outdoors with our bundles and gathered around the fire.

one by one we tossed them in and watched them burn.

it was a mild night for late december

so we stayed outside and enjoyed the fire for a while.

when the embers finally glowed red

we came back inside feeling cleansed and renewed.

this morning i decided to check and see how much additional daylight

we would enjoy now that the light is returning.

hmmm…  according to the sunrise and sunset tables for the denver area,

sunrise this morning occurred one minute later than yesterday,

and for the next four days will be an additional minute later.

oh, sunset is slightly later.

meaning that today had all of three seconds more daylight than yesterday.

i’m still trying to figure out what i did with all that additional time today…

solstice blessings to all of you!!
