come morning

October 5, 2012

the mornings here dazzle.

one of the nice things about getting out early to feed the animals

is watching the sun explode over the horizon

and pour into my yard, my house, my windows.

some days are more subtle

while others command my attention when i might be preoccupied.

when the walls glow orange,

i reach for a camera.

this morning brought its own surprise…

in the form of snow.

stepping out the front door

i was greeted by a cold and surprisingly slippery reality:

summer, even indian summer, has passed.

a glowing and radiant daybreak seemed unlikely,

so i trudged around the yard in the dim light of dawn

in an attempt to capture and document our first snowfall on the farm.

a simple spider web has its own beauty covered with snow.

baby critters looked out in wonder at this foreign substance

while their more seasoned counterparts knew very well

that it was unlikely to last much past sunrise.

still, the chill was enough to keep them indoors,

unless you just might be returning with a treat in your pocket.

then i noticed a small separation in the clouds to the east,

a bit above the horizon.

i waited it out…

and was rewarded.

life is bright and comfortable inside our little feathered nest

perhaps i’ll even fire up these babies at some point today,

as turning on the heat seems richer when accompanied by something from the oven,

don’t you agree?

i’ll see what this day brings.

chances are there will be something inherently beautiful about evening as well.

although i must confess:

it is the promise of a new day that excites me,

come morning.
