packing up memories

August 31, 2012

yesterday we closed on the new property.

it was bittersweet sitting across from the people who are letting go of their land

so that we can have a turn caring for it.

in my mind, as we signed dozens of officious documents,

i was aware that we never really own the land,

we just borrow it for a time.

amidst the buzz of bank and title legalese

my mind wandered back to a morning years ago when we landed in amsterdam,

painfully early in the morning,

when nothing was yet open and there were few places to go.

we found a coffee shop and sank down

into welcoming chairs to pass a little time.

despite a decidedly sleep-fogged brain,

my attention was called to this on the paper napkin:

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”

“Earth does not belong to us; we belong to earth.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.”
― Chief Seattle

i’ve never forgotten it.

so, despite documents that state we now own five acres of precious boulder county agricultural land,

i know that we are borrowing it for a time.

i take that responsibility very seriously.

this morning i have spent time trying to quiet my spirit

by carrying the camera around to pack up some memories.

i’ll get to more of the physical packing shortly,

but first i had to be mindful not only of what lies ahead,

but of what i am passing on, quite literally,

to one of my children.

the circle of life is a precious thing.

i am grateful for my place in it.

“the circle of life is a precious thing….i am grateful for my place in it.” — i love this.
and i love your soul for how you feel about the land.

yes, this entire experience has deepened my understanding and appreciation for what is real and eternal.
i am so happy that i was “open” to it when this lesson was offered.
i am very excited to step into this new life!
