happy valley snow day

February 6, 2012

when forecasters predicted heavy snow for our area this past weekend,

our tribe (including five educators) scheduled a snow dance at chipotle.

we consider ourselves to be bringers of good fortune,

because when we raise our margaritas to a snow day we typically have great success.

this time was no exception.

random flakes were just beginning to fall when our celebration began on thursday evening.

by the time we left, it was officially “snowing”.

by 10 p.m. the st. vrain valley school district had called off school for friday,

at which time our happy valley weekend began.

woohoo!!

by 11:30 p.m. it looked like this:

by friday morning it looked like this:

over a foot of lovely, white fluff fell on our fair town.

this was really a fun snow–  all over the neighborhood yards are sporting snowmen,

snow castles, snow forts, and snow caves.

there is sledding, snowshoeing, and a little slipping and sliding as well.

this morning we decided to pack up our cameras and head to the barn.

those horses had been cooped up for three days, and we knew they wanted to get OUT!!

we were right.

first order of business was a good roll in the snow.

we barely had time to get the halters off before their knees buckled and down they went!

then it was time to kick up their heels, with a little mad galloping and a bit of ditch jumping for added drama.

okay, so the ditches are less than a foot deep, but horses running and leaping in snow??

dramatic.

sara and i had taken our big zoom lenses to stay out of harm’s way while still getting some good close-ups.

this turned out not only to be unnecessary, but a bit of a drawback as you will see.

you just don’t need to zoom in on a nose that’s two inches from your face!!

have i mentioned that we love the gypsy horse disposition?!

we spend a lovely hour and a half just playing with them in the snow.

we love them.

so much.

so very, very much.
