November 11, 2011

today is a beautiful day.

it is a day of remembrance.

an opportunity to say thank you to those who serve.

at 11:11 this morning the air above our town was racketed

by two jets in formation, almost wingtip to wingtip.

i thought about the young people at the controls of those aircraft,

of their strict sense of discipline and attention to detail.

of their dependence upon each other that determines

the success or failure of each and every mission.

my heart beat a little faster at the thought of how they stare danger in the face

when there is a job to be done.

a crowd was gathered on main street,

eager to pay their respects to our local heroes.

these heroes walk among us every day,

a part of the fabric of our society.

on this day, they are honored.

as the parade began and the colors were borne before us,

i looked at faces:  serious young faces who have made a commitment

to uphold  and defend the freedoms that we hold dear.

older faces that have taken their turn and still take pride

in being acknowledged for their service in the armed forces.

faces of those who wear a uniform with dignity,

willingly putting their lives on the line so that we may live free.

faces of those who have suffered great loss,

and whose loved ones deserve being remembered.

strong, determined faces who believe in what they have done

and would do it again if faced with the same decision.

and young faces,

innocent faces.

soft, unlined faces.

faces of the young men and women who hold the future in their hands.

may they know the sacrifices made in their behalf.

on this day, thank you doesn’t seem enough for the price that has been paid

for me.

but it is all i have to give, and i offer it with my whole heart.

thank you.

you are all stars.

lest we forget.

this post is dedicated to our favorite veteran
